I was feeling quite anguished when I created this painting, hence the title.
The choice of colour here is yellow not as a joyous colour, but the colour of jaundice
The lion is the central figure here, tormented by his surroundings, and spitting
demons, like fire, trying to roar all his anguish away.
The dogs at the front are like the wheel of life, the endless circle of birth and death,
and the pain that goes with it.
The rhythm of the painting is like a circle, the figures rise on one side, descend on
the other, the figures at the bottom are dead or dying, but then rise up, to continue
the circle of life and death.
Perhaps hell is not the right title, since that implies eternal damnation, but when
I think of my state of mind when I painted it, somehow it seemed fitting.
